Cleveland Clinic, officially titled as The Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF), is an Ohio nonprofit corporation established in 1921. CCF operates a multispecialty academic medical center in Cleveland, Ohio and affiliated facilities in Ohio, Florida, Nevada, Canada and Abu Dhabi.
History
The Cleveland Clinic was founded in February 1921 by four physicians.
The Cleveland Clinic fire of 1929 killed 123 (or 125??) people and caused significant damage to the original building.[5] The fire started in nitrocellulose x-ray film held in the basement of the hospital. The fire claimed 125 lives, including one of the founders, Dr. Phillips.
In 2005, CCF was the second-largest private medical group practice in the US, with 1,400 physicians in 120 medical specialties and sub-specialties, serving more than a million patient visits a year.
Research
Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute is home to all laboratory-based, translational and clinical research at CCF. Total annual research expenditures were about $250 million from the National Institutes of Health and other funding sources in 2008. With about 1,500 residents and fellows, Cleveland Clinic’s graduate medical education program is one of the largest in the country. A medical school, the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, was opened in 2004.
Reputation
Cleveland Clinic is nationally recognized, particularly in technological and management systems and in the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
Between 2010 and 2013, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) undertook an extensive series of ongoing separate investigations of CCF with at least a dozen inspections and follow-up visits triggered by patient complaints. An analysis of Medicare inspection data between 2011 and 2014 found that CCF was one of at least 230 institutions where validated serious incidentsâ€"dubbed “immediate jeopardy†complaintsâ€" led CMS to threaten loss of ability to serve Medicare patients unless the problems were fixed immediately. Due to the serious safety violations, CCF was on payment termination track for a period of 19 months, placing at stake $1B in annual Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement. The citations were reported and analyzed in detail by Modern Healthcare, which also posted some of the supporting documents.

Cleveland Clinic's main campus consists of 41 buildings on about 140 acres (57Â ha) near University Circle, in Fairfax, Cleveland. CCF operates 14 family health and ambulatory surgery centers in surrounding communities, a multispecialty hospital and family health center in Weston, Florida, an outpatient clinic in Toronto, Ontario.
